How to Adjust Residence Time for Different Materials in a Paddle Dryer

I. Adjustment of Key Parameters
1. Adjusting the overflow weir height: Raising the weir increases the material fill level in the cylinder and extends residence time, while lowering it shortens the time; this is the primary method for controlling the holdup of materials like sludge.
2. Changing the main shaft agitation speed: Reducing paddle speed slows the axial movement of material, extending residence time; increasing speed accelerates discharge, suitable for loose, powdery materials requiring rapid throughput.
3. Adjusting the feed rate: Reducing the feed quantity lowers the axial pushing pressure within the cylinder, extending residence time, whereas increasing the feed rate accelerates material discharge.
II. Adaptation Strategies for Different Materials
1. High-viscosity sludge: Raise the overflow weir height and reduce rotation speed to 5–15 rpm to extend residence time and ensure thorough drying.
2. Heat-sensitive pharmaceutical/food materials: Increase rotation speed and utilize a vacuum environment to complete drying within 10–60 minutes, preventing thermal degradation of active ingredients.
3. Loose granular/powdery materials: Lower the overflow weir height and increase rotation speed, keeping residence time between 2–10 minutes to avoid over-drying.
4. High-moisture paste materials: Simultaneously reduce the feed rate and raise the weir height to extend residence time to several hours, ensuring effective dewatering.
III. Auxiliary Adjustment Methods
1. On some models, the installation angle of the discharge-end paddles can be adjusted to alter the axial pushing force, thereby indirectly adjusting residence time.
2. Adjusting the heating medium temperature allows for fine-tuning residence time parameters in the opposite direction while maintaining drying effectiveness.
