Product introduction

A double tube heat exchanger (also sometimes referred to as a 'pipe-in-pipe' exchanger) is a type of heat exchanger comprising a 'tube in tube' structure. As the name suggests, it consists of two pipes, one within the other. One fluid flows through the inner pipe (analogous to the tube-side in a shell and tube type exchanger) whilst the other flows through the outer pipe, which surrounds the inner pipe (analogous to the shell-side in a shell and tube exchanger).

Working principle

In double tube heat exchanger design, an important factor is the type of flow pattern in the heat exchanger. A double tube heat exchanger will typically be either counterflow or parallel flow. Crossflow just doesn' t work for a double pipe heat exchanger. The flow pattern and the required heat exchange duty allows calculation of the log mean temperature difference. That together with an estimated overall heat transfer coefficient allows calculation of the required heat transfer surface area. Then pipe sizes, pipe lengths and number of bends can be determined.
